iPhone 4 Review

By: Mike Craven

Apples newest phone the iPhone 4 is a very stylish device, in my opinion much more so then its predecessor the iPhone 3.  Its squared off form makes it seem more elegant somehow then the rounded case of the iPhone 3.  It utilizes the same buttons as well as a similar overall look.  The feel of the device seem solid to the touch and the added weight makes it seem built at a higher quality.

The hardware features a Retina display with a resolution of 960×640 that gives the images a super crisp and clean look.  The front facing camera, a must have for the operation of Facetime, works very well.  When using Facetime it streams video almost flawlessly over a wireless connection.  The drawback being that it has to be connected to wireless and can’t function over 3G.  At the core of the device is an A4 1GHz processor designed by Apple and manufactured by Samsung.  The processor is accompanied by 512MB of ram, doubling that of the iPhone 3’s 256MB.  The iPhone 4 also implements 802.11n wifi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.   It has a 5 Mega Pixel camera with flash, which I think is a vast enhancement over the iPhone 3.  I have also recorded some very nice footage using its 720p HD video capabilities.  The antenna is the only downside I see to the new device.  At first I had numerous dropped calls, as did many others.  It was to the point that I went out and bought a Magic Jack and installed a home phone so I could call out from my house.  This problem has been since corrected with the simple purchase of a case.  I put it on and bam, like a miracle, no more dropped calls.

The device is running the iOS operating system, which has many new enhancements.  First of all is the multitasking that allows the operation of multiple apps at the same time with the ability to switch between them rather easily.  Then we have the folders, a must have for the organizational freaks out there and it really does make apps much easier to find.  You can finally change the home screen wallpaper of you device to any picture of your choice.  A new arrival to the mail app is the ability to group by thread, making it easier to look back and see what was said in the past.  If you don’t like this feature however, it can be turned off by going to Settings > Mail > Organize by thread.  There is a new and updated spell checker that will first give you suggestions and ask if you would like to change the word.  There are many more features to this operating system, however I didn’t discuss them all here today.  I only focused one the features I felt were the most important to the device and the consumer.

The iPhone 4 in my opinion is well worth trading that iPhone 3 in on or for that matter just about any other phone that you may have.  It is a very solid phone in all aspects of it’s design, hardware, and software.  There are a few flaws here and there, but I think most iPhone 4 owners would agree that they can be easily overlooked when taking the rest of the package into consideration.
